Boca Bearings

We are excited to announce that Boca Bearings will be attending the upcoming Ceramics Expo, this April 29-30, 2025, a pivotal event for stakeholders in the technical ceramics supply chain. This expo is more than just an opportunity for networking; it represents our commitment to staying ahead of the curve in innovation and technology within our ceramic bearing industry.

A focal point of our attendance is the exploration of advanced bearing technologies, particularly ceramic bearings. Hybrid bearings, which utilize ceramic balls with traditional steel rings, have been integral to the industry for over twenty years. In recent years, fully ceramic bearings have gained traction, offering unique advantages. As they evolve, system designers must consider various factors in selecting the appropriate bearing for specific applications.

As advocates of ceramic bearings, let us seize this opportunity to explore the significant value they bring to the market.

Below is an overview of ceramic bearing properties with an application guide to assist bearing system designers.

Ceramic Bearing Advantages

Ceramic bearings provide numerous benefits over their steel counterparts:

  • Lower Density/Lighter Weight: Reduces overall system weight.

  • High Operating Temperature Limit: Capable of functioning at temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Celsius.

  • Dry Operation: Can run with little to no lubrication.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Superior performance in harsh environments.

  • Non-Magnetic: Ideal for applications requiring magnetic neutrality.

  • High Stiffness: Enhances dynamic performance.

  • Reduced Noise and Vibration: Contributes to quieter operation.

Ceramic Bearing Materials

  1. Silicon Nitride (Si3N4):

The most common ceramic bearing material, Silicon Nitride, boasts low density (40% of steel) and excellent rolling fatigue properties, making it ideal for various applications. While hybrid bearings combining steel rings with ceramic rolling elements are prevalent, full Silicon Nitride bearings are also available. They match the dynamic and static load ratings of steel bearings and provide superior corrosion resistance.

  1. Silicon Nitride Hybrid Bearings:

With over 20 years of production, these bearings are frequently employed in high-speed applications, such as machine tool spindles. They operate with reduced start-up torque and exhibit equal or longer fatigue life compared to steel bearings. However, it's essential to analyze load capacities, as they have a 30% reduced static load rating.

  1. Zirconia (ZrO2):

Increasingly popular, Zirconia-based bearings excel in environments with water and acids. While their density is closer to that of steel, they still offer a 20% reduction in weight. Though their fatigue life may be lower than that of steel, they provide excellent fracture toughness.

  1. Silicon Carbide (SiC):

The hardest ceramic bearing material, Silicon Carbide, is often used in hybrid bearings. It offers superior corrosion resistance and is suitable for exposure to strong acids, with an impressively high operating temperature limit of 1,600 degrees Celsius. However, it should be noted that Silicon Carbide can fail catastrophically under high loads and rolling contact fatigue.

As we look to the future, understanding these diverse bearing materials and their characteristics is key to developing innovative solutions that meet the specific needs of our clients and their applications.
